THE EFFECTS OF TOURISM IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
Tourism affects all places differently, in America and Europe it could help the economy but in the case of Southeast Asia the effects are very different. Many people only talk about its good effects and ignore the bad effects for culture and morality. In light of these issues, it is important to know the effects of tourism in Southeast Asia. The most common effects of tourism in Southeast Asia are Destroy the local culture; food and greeting style, The elimination of domestic products, and Moral destruction; westernized lifestyle.
Tourism in Southeast Asia destroys the local culture such as the food and the greeting style. As Professor Cherry said, tourism affects the Thai greeting gesture which is usually done when meeting each other in Thailand. That gesture is called ‘Wai’ but nowadays we do not see Thai people doing that anymore, they will end up like ‘hey!’ or ‘hi!’ because they start picking up those things from tourism that actually influence. It has the same impact as Thai cuisine that has been modified because a lot of tourists come to Thailand and taste the Thai cuisine that originally is very hot, very spicy and very sour so by adapting those tastes to fit people across the world that also tend to change the taste of Thai cuisine as well that is why nowadays if you want to taste the real Thai cuisine it’s very difficult to find.
Tourism in Southeast Asia also eliminates domestic products. Tourism made the government import many products from abroad, especially modern technology tools that are useful for providing quality facilities and also maintenance of existing facilities. People also tend to buy imported products, which are considered to have a higher brand and quality. This is very disadvantaged because it doesn’t support domestic-made products so that domestic products can not compete with foreign products and can not develop.
Tourism in Southeast Asia can destroy the morale of the locals. As we know that the Westernized lifestyle is very bad compared to the Eastern lifestyle. In every part of Southeast Asia virginity and being faithful to your partner are very important but in Western culture these values are dead and virginity is no longer important and often lost at a young age. Westerrn lifestyle also leads to drug and alcohol consumption. West foreigners bring these horrible things to Southeast Asia. Foreigners also increase the crimes in places like Bali Indonesia, Cebu Philippines, Bangkok Thailand and many others by influencing the locals to drink more Alcohol, drugs, have free sex with anyone and all of these things destroy the moral of Southeast Asian countries.
In fact, we need the solution of those effects. The governments of these nations can do anything about protecting the country and its people from rampant foreign influence. What we will recommend is limiting the number of foreign tourists that enter a country (yearly quota or limiting the number that are in the country at any given time). In conclusion, tourism in Southeast Asia has very horrible effects on the local people and that country. However the limitation of tourists can help to tame the tourism influence to the people in Southeast Asia.
